All-Thumbs-Up

Happy Thursday my bloggy peeps!!! Welcome to Thumbs Up! Thursday, where I post about all the awesomeness going on in my life and the world around me. Thanks for joining me on this fine Thumbs Up! Thursday!!!
Its been a pretty quiet week for me. Still NOT running, knee and hamstring STILL hurt. So both of those are worthy of a HUGE Thumbs Down!!!IMG_4382
I finally whined enough and he caved talked the hubby into getting me an indoor trainer for the bike. Its not the one I originally hoped for, that one cost a bit more than he was willing to pay. I’m not sure I would know the difference between the two though. Maybe one day I can graduate to the big girl trainer 🙂 I used it for the first time Tuesday. Its certainly not as fun as riding on the road, but it will do the trick for getting some times and miles in. I do, however, need to get a cadence sensor for the Garmin so that I can figure out how far and fast and I riding. I am a stats junkie and it kills me not knowing my mileage…down to the 1/10 of a mile…like its that freakin important!!! Thumbs Up! to new gear…wooohooo!!! And another Thumbs Up! to me for beginning to embrace spandex….. so hoooootttt, I know!!!!

I am still being blown away everyday by the entries that continue to trickle in for the J4JS 10×10 Virtual Race!!! You all get major Thumbs Up! for your mad promotion skills. And on that note, I am going to up the ante slightly for the “Most Referrals” award. Because the main emphasis of the 10×10 campaign and mission behind this race is raising awareness for Joubert Syndrome….the winner of the “Most Referrals” award gets to choose which prize they want out of the prize closet before any of the other awards are given. Bring in the most referrals….you get to choose your swag….easy as that!!! Now, you still need to run your little hearts out because you could still win an award based on your race time. Participants spreading the word about the J4JS 10×10 Virtual Race is just as important as their performance!!! There is still time to register and spread the word. I will take entries right up until the final race day 10/10/10…..so keep on keeping on my 10×10 army!!
Thumbs Up! to any of you who have been voting daily to help rare disease in the Pepsi Refresh campaign. See {this} post for details. You can continue to vote once a day until September 30th, so keep the votes coming….its making a difference, we jumped 2 spots yesterday!!!

Thumbs Up! request from Alanna @ Running42km “I completed my last LONG long run on Sunday. It was 34km/21miles – was supposed to be 32km/20 miles, but the route we were given was somehow more. First marathon is in 3 weeks! Hooray for taper!” Hooray indeed Alanna!!!
Speaking of taper….. ”trail girl” Ashley is running her last long run this weekend and then it will be “taper-ville” for her also for the Medoc Trail Marathon….you know, the marathon I had hoped to run but my knee punked out on me. So Thumbs Up! to you Ashley, and good luck on that last long run.

So, that about sums up my Thumbs Up! Thursday. What’s been going on in your world that deserves a Thumbs Up!?? Gotta giveaway, upcoming race, race report or just random bit of awesomeness going on??? Drop me a comment or email and let me know!!! Have a fabulously Thumbs Upsy! Thursday!!!

>iRunLikeAGirl.com Gives Back……

I had the opportunity a few months ago to test some super cool products from iRUNLIKEAGIRL.  They have a great selection of ladies running gear.  See {this} post for my review of their girly skirt and sleeveless shirt.
The fabulous ladies at iRunLikeaGirl are one of the sponsors of the 10×10 J4JS Virtual Race.  The winner of this prize will receive a product of their choice from iRunLikeaGirl.
And as if that wasn’t generous enough, they have agreed to donate a portion of sales to the Joubert Syndrome Foundation if you put “joubert syndrome” in the order comments field.  This promotion will run from now until October 24th.  So head over to irunlikeagirl.com and order some super fabulous gear!!!!  “Run like a girl” and help support the Joubert Syndrome Foundation!!!!

>10×10 Virtual Race Sponsorship Spotlight: Zensah

>

I have been blown away by the companies that have agreed to sponsor the 10×10 J4JS Virtual Race.  To help boost some extra excitement about the race (and throw a little advertisement the sponsors way), I’m going to post about some of the companies offering up prizes this week.  Continue to spread the word….you still have up until 10/10 to sign up and run the race!!!!
ba00a2f1ddea04e8
One of the gender neutral awards up for grabs is from Zensah (see guys, there is something you can win and actually use!).  They are donating a pair of calf sleeves, an approx $40 value.  In case you are not a gear-aholic like me and have never heard of Zensah, they make some great compression products.  They sell shirts, socks, arm sleeves, calf sleeves, shorts, bras….you name it….if it can be compressed, Zensah has it covered.
Here is a snippet about the company:
Based on the Italian word "SENZA" meaning to be "without" so too should athletes be "without limits." This mantra inspires us each and every day to create the most cutting edge sports apparel. All of our products are developed using seamless technology, simply meaning they are made without seams.
Zensah was created to help athletes at all levels improve their performance by utilizing innovative sportswear made with cutting edge technology.
Zensah’s revolutionary seamless design consists of an ultra-breathable, moisture wicking fabric that draws sweat away from the body, allowing the garment and athlete to stay cool, dry and light. Zensah®, the pioneer of graduated compression apparel, has created revolutionary seamless sportswear designed as a true second-skin fit, giving the athlete greater performance, comfort and mobility.
Our technology has allowed us to create groundbreaking products and enhance our athletes’ performances not only in training but more importantly in competition.
Special thanks to Zensah for being a sponsor of the 10×10 J4JS Virtual Race.  If you would like to enter the virtual race and have not done so, please check out the details {here}.  Enter and plan to run your butt off….you could be the lucky winner of some sweet calf sleeves!!!!

>Take a Second…..

>

…..literally a second and go “Vote 4 Hope” at the Pepsi Refresh Project.  I would like for each and every one of you to go vote for the Children’s Rare Disease Network and their campaign to “build a funding platform to promote rare disease research for kids”.  Joubert Syndrome is classifies as a “rare dieseae” and the Children’s Rare Disease Network is a partnering organization of the Joubert Syndrome Foundation that helps advocate for rare diseases like Joubert Syndrome.  The CRDN has the chance to win up to $250K if they are in the top ideas at Pepsi Refresh.  So, please people…..go vote….and you can vote DAILY!!!!  And pass it on!!!!  It is super easy to post this to your Facebook and Twitter pages.  Thanks a million!!!!

All-Thumbs-Up

Happy Thursday my bloggy peeps!!!  Welcome to Thumbs Up! Thursday, where I post about all the awesomeness going on in my life and the world around me.  Thanks for joining me on this fine Thumbs Up! Thursday
I’m beginning to feel like this regularly scheduled blog post should be renamed “Thumbs DOWN" Thursday.  I get two HUGE Thumbs Downs! for not working out a single time since last Saturday.  Last Saturday’s failed attempt at running really has be feeling down in the dumps.  I just don’t understand why all this time off has not decreased the pain in my legs….its been almost 6 full weeks!!!!!  And honestly I have fallen completely off the PT wagon.  It seems so pointless to me, it seems to only aggravate my hamstring pain.  I know I’m BAD!!!!!!!
But I give myself a whimpy Thumbs Up! for trying to be open-minded.  I stopped by the library Tuesday and picked up a copy of “Chi Running”.
I have heard rave reviews on the book and how it has totally revolutionized running and obliterated pain and injury for some people who have tried it.  So far it seems kind of hokey, but I’m trying to keep a positive attitude about it.  I guess my next step will be to try barefoot running….that should be fun with winter coming up LOL!!  In the meantime I’m looking for a bike trainer, since I’m too chicken to ride alone on the roads.  I have my eyes on this one, the CycleOps Fluid 2
But just like bikes, there are tons of options with trainers, any of you more experienced cyclist have opinions on the matter????  Please enlighten me!!!!
And a Thumbs Up! to Haley for using her big girl potty for the first time last night!!!!  Yipee for potty training!!!!
Thumbs Ups! for the rest of the world:
Team Carter is running the last of their 3 race series this weekend.  BIG Thumbs Up! to them this weekend for all their great work with fund raising for the Joubert Syndrome Foundation and all of their running accomplishments!!!!
Thumbs Up! to the Jogger Blogger…..she “spilled the beans” CONGRATS!!!!
Thumbs Up! to the death of Summer!!!  Finally you are on your way OUT!!!  With just 6 days left until Fall officially begins, I bid you adieu!!!!  Although it is still hotter than blazes by 1pm here, at least the temps are nice and cool in the morning.  It is no secret Summer is my least favorite season of the year….good riddance!!!!  But it is bitter sweet for me that Fall is approaching since I am still on the injured reserve list for running…boohooo 😦
Thumbs Up! to my dad.  He is doing well this week.  His vision has not improved, but he seems to be getting used to it and able to compensate somewhat for the blind spots.  He hopes to return to work next week.  Now you need to get on a diet and exercise program…yep, I’m calling you out!!!!!
There is still time to enter/donate to the J4JS 10×10 Virtual Race!!!  Thumbs Up! to all of you doing a fabulous job recruiting.  I got a couple more entries this week and I am ecstatic!  I’ve gotten way more entries than I EVER thought I would.  I hope to get a mini “race packet” out to you all in the next week or so.  So BOLO!!!
Race Reports:  So many I missed while on vacay!!!  But here are the ones I caught, sorry if I missed yours!
Giveaways: again, so much going on, I can’t keep up with it all……
So that about does it for this week’s Thumbs Up! Thursday.  If I missed you, I’m truly sorry!!!!  Shoot me a comment or email and I will gladly link you in.  Have a very Thumbs Upsy! Thursday!

>When Things Don’t Go As Planned

>

Hubs and I went on vacation last week to Las Vegas. I had the blog all planned out with pre-written drafts, a guest post, and maybe even a “Wordless Wednesday” from Vegas. But things didn’t quite go as planned……. Its been over a week since I’ve blogged, so take a bathroom break then grab a snack and a drink….this will be a long one.
It all started off Saturday afternoon. We were going to have a nice little cookout for the end of summer/Labor Day. We were all set to go, “trail girl” Ashley and her son had just arrived and we were waiting on a few others to get here. Then hubs comes in the house and announces he was stung by a hornet. Now here is a guy with a known allergy to bee stings and we have no Epi-Pen in the house. But he’s been stung a couple times recently and didn’t have a reaction, so I didn’t think much of it, maybe he’s outgrown the allergy. I grabbed some Benadryl for him and then I hear Ashley say, “he doesn’t look so good”. He started to go out and stumbled a little, but somehow managed to get back up on his feet. Then his body fully rebelled, and he went down like Roy Jones Jr in the 9th…..fell straight back and his head hit the hardwood like a bowling ball. He literally did look a lot like this knockout!!!
I quickly dialed 911 and they arrived an eternity later. By the time they arrived he was coming-to and the EMTs didn’t think he was having a reaction. He was sort of coherent enough to refuse to go to the hospital. But the party was official OVER at this point, with hubs lying in bed in the fetal position fighting waves of nausea and a killer headache. Now I was worried about a possible concussion and whether we should be flying to Vegas in two days.
His symptoms improved and he was not going to let a little traumatic brain injury stop him from going to his favorite place on the planet. I reluctantly agreed to go as planned, only if his symptoms were completely gone. I’m not sure if he was lying or not, but we went through with the trip as planned.
We safely landed in Vegas Monday morning without hubs’ head exploding midflight. We checked in at Planet Holywood (which I was mildly disappointed in) and we quickly dropped our bags at the bell desk and headed for our favorite gambling spot with the cheapest beer on the strip….the uber sleek and sophisticated Casino Royale. Think old sleazy Vegas mixed with a healthy serving of cigarette smoke and bad restaurants. But hey, the beer is cheap and the tables have low minimum buy-ins! But as we were getting settled in, we got a call from my brother saying my mom took my dad to the hospital, they thought he had a stroke. He said he was stable and not in any imminent danger, not to worry and not to come home. We tried not to worry, but it really took the wind out of our sails. I just couldn’t have fun knowing he was in the hospital and not knowing what kind of damage had been done. Although they assured us we didn’t need to come home, I couldn’t help but feel like we should.
We decided to go back to the room around dinner time. I was going to try surfing the net and blog a little to occupy my mind when I quickly realized….like anything else in Vegas, Wi-Fi is not free. There was no way I was going to pay $20/24 hours of internet service. I couldn’t bear the thought of mobile blogging on my phone, and all the drafts were saved on my computer. So with nothing else left to do, I went to sleep and sent the hubs out to gamble my money away.
I had a pretty miserable time for the next day and a half. We had a crappy view from our room, it was raining, the pool SUCKED, hubs was loosing all our gambling allowance, and the price of everything we wanted to do seemed to have doubled since the last time we were in Vegas three years ago. I didn’t feel like doing anything, I had planned on trying to run, but I didn’t even feel like doing that. We wanted to see a show, have a nice dinner, get massages, maybe tour the Grand Canyon or Hoover Dam. But it was all so ridiculously expensive, all we managed to get was a massage.
By Wednesday, they discharged my dad. The MRI did show a mild stroke near the optic nerve which has affected his vision. But knowing that he was home and doing well eased my mind some and I was able to loosen up a bit. We decided to buy a 24 hour pass to the buffet. If we couldn’t win any money in Vegas, we were going to hurt them at the buffet by God!!!! I ate until I was literally sick. I haven’t weighed myself since the trip, and I am honestly afraid to. But it was oh, so good!!!!
We decided to really enjoy our last night in Vegas and gamble the rest of our allowance away, and drink all the “free” booze (although we all know that it does not end up being free). With just $50 left, hubs turned it around, and in a matter of hours and walked away UP over $400. The “house” did not win this time and we were ecstatic!!!! We managed to turn a miserable and stressful trip into a pretty good one in the end. This is the only picture we managed to take. We weren’t really in the tourist-y picture taking mood….its kind of a tradition, to take a cheesy Elvis picture each time we are in Vegas.
Nice hair….it was super windy!!! And no, that is NOT a beer in my hand! DSC01634
I have spent the last two days trying to readjust to east coast time. We managed to get our lazy sloth-like selves out of bed long enough this morning to go ride the bikes. It has been 5 weeks since I have ran and my knee has been feeling ok. We originally planned to do a little “brick” (two consecutive workouts in a row….running after biking in this case) so we rode the bikes near some trails I have run in the past. We rode 10 fairly tough miles with lots of hills. We got off the bikes, with a mild feeling of wanting to vomit and quads feeling like they were filled with cement. It was probably not the best circumstances in which to test out my legs for the first time….but in the end, I don’t think it mattered one way or the other.
We walked a short distance to the trails and hubs took off leaving me behind. I was afraid to start, not knowing what to expect. I now wish I hadn’t even tried. It resembled more like “shuffle, hobble, shuffle, hobble” instead of running. From step 1, it was nothing but pain. Pain with impact in the left knee, pain with extension in the right hamstring, and more pain with impact in the right IT band. My legs are beyond FUBAR. Time off has not lessened the pain….if anything it is worse. I fully admit, I did not do a single PT exercise while in Vegas, who can blame me?? But I would have thought the time off would at least helped the injuries heal. I’m not sure where to turn now. PT is getting expensive week after week with little improvement. Do I go back to the orthopedist? Do I just patiently take more time off and try again later? Its a good thing I finally got a bike and actually like it. My cardio endurance would be in the toilet without it!!!! But I’m not confident enough yet to go out alone which limits the amount of miles and workouts I’m getting in each week.
But maybe I will be able to turn it all around soon, just like we managed to do in Vegas….here’s hoping anyway! But in the meantime, I am learning to become a cyclist instead of a runner, which is a little bitter sweet 😦

>CSN Winner

>

Wow, only 30 entries…..I thought more people would be jumping at a chance for a $40 gift certificate.  But the blog world is really saturated with CSN giveaways right now…oh well.  Anyhow, thanks to those who did enter and to CSN for hosting the Giveaway!!!.  And thanks for the suggestions on naming the bike.  Some of them really made me laugh, like Zoe’s name Blue Steel”….you know, from Zoolander.  I thought that was hilarious, guess its kind of an inside joke if you haven’t seen it though.
Some other honorable mentions were:
  • Blue Burr
  • The Blue Wave
  • Greased Lightening
  • Wheelerfred
  • Towanda
  • Blaze
  • Dwight
  • Haley’s Thunder
I think I’m still going to have to “bond” with the bike a little more and see if the bike’s persona reveals itself to me.  But thanks for the suggestions!!!
Without further ado, the lucky winner is:

Congrats Stephanie!!!!!  Email me at jogforjoubertsyndrome@yahoo.com and I will forward your info to CSN.

The “Cherry on Top” Award has been floating around the bloggy world recently.  I was awarded the “Cherry on Top” Award a few weeks ago by a new bloggy friend, Tressa, at Training w/a Track Coach and His Adorable Wife.  Then last week Pam at Running From the Law sent me the award also…..DOUBLE SWEET!!!!  Thanks ladies!!!!
So doing my part to spread the love, I have to do the following things to accept the award:
#1 Answer this question: If you had the chance to go back and change one thing in your life, would you and what would it be?
-oh man, I could answer this question so many ways…..but that would take all day to answer…..”buy stock in Yahoo!, not drink that margarita made with twice the alcohol it called for, skip the whole big hair/Rave hairspray era, etc, etc.  But in keeping it fitness/running related, I would have never quit every high school sport I ever tried, and would have been more involved in sports in general.  I think I missed a whole lot by not being involved in more sports when I was younger.  I think I could have been an amazing athlete had I started at a young age.  I have been told countless times what a beautiful golf swing I have and if I could just figure out how to leverage my power I could kill a ball, and I should have played basketball or volleyball because I’m so tall, I was a great swimmer, but couldn’t get over my nerves at swim meets so I just quit, on and on and on……shoulda, woulda, coulda right????
#2 The second thing you have to do is, pick 6 people and give them this award.
I think just about everybody in blog world has gotten this award.  I was late getting around to writing this post and it seems like the award spread like wild fire to all the blogs I follow.  So I’m not going to be redundant and give it out to those who already have it.  But in the off chance that you haven’t been blessed with this award….consider yourself awarded!!!!
#3 The third and final thing is, thank the person who gave you the award.
Thanks again to Tressa and Pam.  I recently started following their blogs and they are running in my 10×10 Virtual Race.  Hop on over and check them out!

All-Thumbs-Up

Happy Thursday my bloggy peeps!!!  Welcome to Thumbs Up! Thursday, where I post about all the awesomeness going on in my life and the world around me….aka the place to go to get your race reports and giveaway links!!!!
Thumbs Up! again to the amazing response I continue to receive for the 10×10 Virtual Race.  We are a month out from the race and I already have around 25 participants…..a much bigger response than I ever imagined!!!  Keep up the good work with promoting the race my 10×10 army!!!!
Semi Thumbs Up! to me for stick-to-it’dness (yep, that’s a made up word).  I am sticking to my physical therapy regime….for the most part.  I did miss two days, I just simply forgot to do it, plain and simple.  I went back to see if I have made any progress.  The quads and hammies are still super tight, but the hips are a little more stable.  He added some more exercises….joy!!!!  The “semi” Thumbs Up! is because I’m not quite convinced that this is working for me….yet.  Still unable to run, still have pain, still no real signs of improvement.  We’ll see……
And biggest Thumbs Up! this week goes to my, yet to be named, bike.  I LOVE this thing!!!!  I still can’t get over how much I’m enjoying myself.  I NEVER thought I would like cycling this much…..ever.  I convinced “trail girl” Ashley get out of the woods and hit the road with me and another running acquaintance on Tuesday.  This was finally the flat route I had been searching for.  HUGE difference between flat and hilly riding.  We rode for 14 miles and I was not even the slightest bit tired at the end, I could have gone another 14.  I think I could have ridden faster but we let the other rider set the pace.  But it was fun, nonetheless, even if it wasn’t a super sweaty workout….I got some time and miles in which = becoming more comfortable on the bike 🙂
Thumbs Up! Shout outs:

~Zaneta @ Runner’s Luck just graduated!!!  Congrats!!!

~Erin @ From Fat to Fab ~ Virtual Race for the Boobies Extended….hope that concussion is getting better Erin!
